RECO
The Wild RobotThe RECOs are the sleek, silver recovery robots sent by the Makers to retrieve all ROZZUM units, including Roz. Their arrival transforms the island from a place of peace into a battleground, and their systematic destruction by the island's animals marks the climax of the story, revealing the Makers' relentless determination and the deep bonds Roz has formed.
Identity and Arrival
The RECOs are the antagonists of the story, a trio of identical robots dispatched by the Makers to recover all missing ROZZUM units. They are described as resembling Roz but being larger, bulkier, and shinier, with the word "RECO" lightly engraved on their torsos followed by their individual unit numbers: RECO 1, RECO 2, and RECO 3. They arrive on the island in a sleek white triangular airship with a single dark window facing forward, descending like a giant migratory bird from the south. The three robots look out from this window, and upon landing in a small meadow at the foot of the mountain, they emerge and stand in a line like a glittering wall, facing the dark figure of Roz who hides at the edge of the forest.
The Hunt for Roz
Upon meeting Roz, RECO 1 speaks in a cold, flat voice, identifying her as "unit ROZZUM 7134" and declaring their purpose: "We are here to recover all ROZZUM units." When Roz tells them there are four others but they are dead, a quick analysis reveals she has disappeared, prompting the RECOs to return to their airship and retrieve silver rifles. Without speaking, they deploy in their standard search pattern: RECO 1 walks straight toward the southern tip of the island, RECO 2 walks directly up the mountainside, and RECO 3 walks straight into the forest. This marks the beginning of the hunt, with the RECOs acting as an implacable, coordinated force.
The Forest Assault and Destruction of RECO 3
RECO 3's march through the forest is met with a coordinated attack by the island's animals. Everywhere it goes, it is greeted by screaming animals, and it unknowingly walks into the middle of an assault. An unending stream of birds bombards it with droppings, forcing it to drop its weapon and wipe its dirty face with both hands. This is the moment the Fuzzy Bandits have been waiting for; they emerge from the tall grass, seize the rifle with their agile hands, and carry it away. Tawny and Crownpoint watch from the underbrush, and the deer lowers its head so the raccoons can carefully place the rifle on its antlers before they slip into the shadows. When RECO 3 realizes its weapon is gone, it is too late, and it lets out a sad electronic tone. As the birds continue their bombardment, the robot turns and blindly backs into the mud. Broadfoot, the male moose, then emerges from the trees and positions himself directly in the blind robot's path. When the robot is within range, Broadfoot turns and kicks with his powerful hind legs, delivering a violent crack that sends excrement flying from the RECO's head. The moose kicks again, and the robot's head falls to the side, revealing a tangle of silver tubes in its neck. Though the legs of RECO 3 continue to pump, Broadfoot keeps kicking, crushing the head into an ugly shape until, with a final crack, it detaches and flies through the air, crashing into the mud. The headless robot crackles and smokes, its legs stop, and it never moves again.
The Mountain Battle and Destruction of RECO 2
RECO 2's fate is sealed in a battle at the mountain. Nettle and Thorn, the bear cubs, are bruised and bleeding, and their mother is in a far worse state, but they consider it worthwhile if RECO 2 has finally been killed. They creep to the edge of the cliff, and there, at the foot of the waterfall, scattered on the wet rocks, lies the broken body of the dead robot. The bears' sacrifice and the destruction of RECO 2 demonstrate the lengths the island's creatures will go to protect Roz, and the cost they are willing to pay.
The Final Confrontation and Death of RECO 1
RECO 1, the last of the trio, stands in the Grand Prairie, unable to comprehend the scene before him: a smoking hill of ashes and a jumble of footprints, evidence of a great bonfire with hundreds of animals and a robot. He turns his face to Roz and speaks in a calm, garbled voice, delivering a chilling warning: "Mmmore RRRECO will come for you. And if you destroy them, still more will come. The Mmmakers will not stop until all missing robots have been recovered." When Roz asks when they will come and how much time they have left, RECO 1 tells her she can always be repaired and urges her to go to the airship and bring all the robot parts with her, saying the ship knows what to do before his voice trails off, his eyes darken, and he dies. His final words reveal the Makers' relentless determination and foreshadow the ongoing threat to Roz's existence.
Aftermath and Significance
The destruction of the RECOs does not bring peace. The geese and otters bustle around Roz, removing arms and legs from the pile of robot parts and pressing them against her body, hoping to hear clicking sounds and see the limbs reattach so Roz can return to her old self and life on the island can return to normal. But nothing happens; no matter what they do, the limbs will not attach, as Roz's body is too damaged. The RECOs' arrival and defeat serve as the climax of the story, testing the bonds Roz has formed with the island's animals and revealing the Makers' unyielding pursuit. Their presence underscores the central conflict between the natural world Roz has embraced and the industrial, mechanical world she came from, and their defeat comes at a great cost, leaving Roz broken and the island's future uncertain.
